Health providers, consumers, legislators to rally against Gov.’s closing mental health hospital and addiction services

August 13th, 2009--Healthcare providers, consumers and legislative leaders, including Speaker of the House Chris Donovan, rallied at Gov. Jodi Rell’s mansion against her decision to close Cedarcrest Hospital and detox programs at Blue Hill Hospital and Connecticut Hospital.

The closures will severely hurt people suffering from mental illness and addictions and their communities.

Rell claims that the services can be provided in the public sector yet at the same time she has proposed slashing state funding to private providers. In addition, clients at Cedarcrest, Blue Hills, and CVH suffer from the most complex and medically involved issues. Many are served by these state facilities because the private sector is not equipped to provide necessary services. They often come to Cedarcrest, Blue Hills and CVH after living on the streets, overburdening private hospital emergency rooms or having been imprisoned.
