Public Forum: the Crisis Facing Connecticut’s Community Program Workers
As direct care workers in Connecticut’s group homes and not-for-profit agencies, we are overworked and underpaid. The State of Connecticut has not provided a Cost of Living Increase in over 4 years, while the cost of our medical benefits has increased each year. We can’t take the crunch any more and we are suffering.
But thanks to the over 50 Union members who came to the 1199 Union office on December 13, 2011 to meet with Governor Malloy’s Commissioner of Labor, Glenn Marshall, the Governor decided to put a 1 % increase, effective January 2013, iton his State budget proposal for not-for-profit agencies like ours. It’s not enough and it’s not soon enough, but it’s a start. We have to keep pushing for real improvements.
That’s why on Tuesday, April 10th, we need you join us as we educate our state legislators about the crisis in our field at a forum at the Legislative Office Building that is sponsored by the Co-Chairs of the Public Health Committee. Click here for a printable flyer with the details of the event.
Health care workers can no longer afford medical coverage for ourselves or our children, and we can no longer make ends meet. We need to fill the hearing room with group home & not-for-profit agency workers, to show our elected leaders that we can’t take being underpaid, overworked, and without medical benefits any longer.
Your presence makes our voice stronger – BE THERE to on April 10th for ourselves, our clients & our families!
